Oregon's Sonja Newcombe Named Pac-10 Volleyball Player Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- OREGON junior outside hitter Sonja Newcombe has been named the Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 29 - Oct. 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Newcombe was instrumental on both offense and defense as the Ducks upset No. 4 USC (3-0) and No. 5 UCLA (3-1) over the weekend. For the two matches combined, her kills, hitting, assists, aces, blocks and digs totals were second-most on the team. Against the Bruins, the Lake Arrowhead, Calif., native posted her fourth double-double of the year, hitting .326 for a season-high 19 kills and 18 digs. She also set season-highs with six blocks and 23 points, leading the Ducks in both categories. Facing the Trojans, Newcombe hit .357 totaling six kills while adding seven digs and two blocks. This is the second weekly honor for Newcombe and the 12th overall for Oregon.
