Washington's Lawrie Named Finalist for Sportswoman of the Year Award

Washington softball player Danielle Lawrie has been named one of 10 finalists from around the world for the 2009 Women's Sports Foundation's Sportswoman of the Year award, the organization recently announced. Each year, the Women's Sports Foundation recognizes an individual and team Sportswoman whose performances over a 12-month span has been above and beyond those of their peers. Criteria is based on new records and world championships won.

Pacific-10 Conference Athletes Recognized as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars, which are presented by the Diverse: Issues In High Education magazine, were recently named, recognizing the academic achievements of 49 Pacific-10 Conference student-athletes from four member institutions. Named for the famed tennis player and scholar Arthur Ashe, student-athletes have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their communities to be eligible for the award.

    Lawrie, Vollmer and Numerous Pac-10 Alumni Nominated for Espys

    The Pac-10 Conference will be heavily represented at ESPN's ESPY Awards, taking place Wednesday, July 15 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Among the nominees are Washington's Danielle Lawrie and California's Dana Vollmer, who were each nominated after leading their respective teams to a national championship. Oregon State's upset of then-No. 1 USC in football is also nominated for Best Upset of the Year.

    Washington Named Division I Coaching Staff of the Year

    Head coach Heather Tarr and her entire coaching staff at the University of Washington have been selected as the NFCA's NCAA Division I Coaching Staff of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Monday. Tarr and her staff piloted the Huskies to the first NCAA Championship in program history earlier this month.
