Nov. 13, 2007 WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- California junior forward Valerie Barnes has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Nov. 6-12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Barnes, from Martinez, Calif., earned her second straight award with her three-goal weekend that led the Golden Bears to victory over Oregon and Oregon State and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. On Friday against Oregon State, Barnes scored on a penalty kick to give the Bears the early 1-0 lead and tallied the game winner in the 54th minute as the Bears rolled to a 3-1 win. The junior returned on Sunday and put home a breakaway goal past the Oregon goalkeeper in the 85th minute which sealed the 3-0 victory. The Golden Bears (14-5-0, 6-3-0 Pac-10) open the NCAA Tournament on familliar turf as they travel the short distance to Stanford, Calif. and face Santa Clara at 4:30 p.m on Friday, Nov. 16. The Golden Bears defeated the Broncos, 2-0, on Sept. 30. This is Barnes' second weekly honor and the third for the Golden Bears this year as freshman Alex Morgan received the award on Oct. 2.
