Feb. 6, 2007

STANFORD freshman Carly Janiga has been named Pacific-10 Conference Gymnast of the Week for January 30 - February 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Janiga, a 4'11 freshman from Paradise Valley, Ariz., had a remarkable performance on Sunday, winning all four events and the all-around with career bests on vault (9.925), beam (9.900), and the all-around (39.575). The freshman phenom played a critical role on another successful team performance and had tremendous pressure placed on her in the absence of Stanford's junior dynamic duo Liz Tricase and Tabitha Yim. Carly's steady performance was the key factor that gave the Cardinal another 196+ score that kept their No. 5 national ranking and the top place in the Pac-10. Stanford had a very convincing win over rival California 196.075-189.925 continuing their undefeated run in the Pac-10.

Stanford is currently ranked fifth in the national standings. The Cardinal will return home to host a quad meet featuring No. 15 Oregon State, No. 11 Iowa State and San Jose State Fri., Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Maples Pavilion in their annual Breast Cancer Awareness event.

ALSO NOMINATED: Aubrey Kelly, ARIZ; Nicole Harris, ASU; Mandi Rodriguez, OSU.
