Pac-10 Announces Gymnast and Event Specialist of the Week Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE's Nicole Harris has been named Pacific-10 Conference Gymnast of the Week for January 15-21, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Furthermore, Marci Bernholtz of UCLA has been named the Pac-10 Event Specialist of the Week. Harris, a junior from Long Beach, N.Y., won the all-around competition to help the No. 23 Sun Devils beat No. 22 California (195.175-191.750) on the road and earn their best score of the 2008 campaign to date. Competing in the all-around for the first time this season, 2006 All-American Harris scored a 39.325, attaining the highest all-around score from a Sun Devil so far this season and placing her 10th nationally. Harris additionally won the floor competition. Performing her inaugural floor exercise of 2008, Harris once again earned a Sun Devil season-high mark (9.850) on the apparatus. Harris also placed second in each of the meet's other three individual events, garnering team-leading scores of 9.875 on bars and 9.825 on beam. Riding on Harris's successes, the Sun Devils move up to No. 20 in the national rankings. Bernholtz, a freshman from Unionville, Ont., Canada, recorded a meet-high 9.875 on her first-ever collegiate balance beam performance. In a quad competition against Brown and Wisconsin-Eau Claire at Cal State Fullerton, Bernholtz earned the individual event victory despite competing early in the Bruins' rotation. Her score contributed to UCLA season-high beam and team scores of 49.025 and 196.125, respectively, and the overall team win. With her mark, Bernholtz is now ranked No. 4 and UCLA moves up to No. 8 in the national rankings.
