EUGENE, Ore. - University of Oregon women's basketball player Carolyn Ganes was one of 12 Canadian women selected to compete in the Pan American Games Aug. 1-9 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Ganes becomes the first Duck player in the Pan Am Games in 24 years (1979) when current Oregon coach Bev Smith and teammate Alison Lang represented Canada.

"Carolyn had a great camp," said Oregon associate head coach Allison McNeill, who also heads up the Pan Am team. "She is much improved from last summer after a year of collegiate basketball."

A 6-foot-3 sophomore forward/center, Ganes co-led Oregon in scoring with a 10.9 average last season. She was an All-Freshman Team honoree by the Pac-10 Conference.

"Carolyn's presence on the national team is a great reflection of our whole program here at Oregon and is exciting for our future," said Smith, now in her third year as the Ducks' coach.

The Pan Am squad, which also is the Senior Women's National Team, will train in Toronto from July 20-26 before leaving for the Dominican Republic on July 27.

"The Pan Am games and the national team training camps will pay dividends for Carolyn and the Ducks next season," McNeill said.
