WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- OREGON STATE sophomore forward Danny Mwanga was named Pac-10 Player of the Year, UCLA's Amobi Okugo was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and STANFORD head coach Bret Simon was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year, as Commissioner Larry Scott announced the men's soccer all-conference honors today.
PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR -- DANNY MWANGA, OREGON STATE
Mwanga, a native of Portland, Ore., becomes the first-ever Oregon State player to be named Conference Player of the Year. Last season's Freshman of the Year, Mwanga led the Conference in multiple categories, including points (30), points per game (1.67), goals scored (14), goals per game (0.78) and game-winning goals (5). His marks in goals per game and points per game rank fourth and 12th in the NCAA, respectively. Mwanga became only the fourth Pac-10 men's soccer player all-time to earn back-to-back Player of the Week honors, doing so on Nov. 10, 2009 and Nov. 17, 2009.
PAC-10 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR -- AMOBI OKUGO, UCLA
Okugo, becomes the fourth Bruin player, and first since 2005, to win the honor of Pac-10 Freshman of Year. A native of Sacramento, Calif., Okugo joins Alex Yi (2000), Chad Barrett (2003) and Sal Zizzo (2005) as the other Bruins' to win the postseason accolade. Okugo started every game at midfield for the Bruins, recording two assists and helping the Bruin defense to a Conference leading 0.78 team goals against average.
PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR -- BRET SIMON, STANFORD
Leading his team to the most victories since 2002, Bret Simon was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year, winning the award for the second time in his career (2001). He has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround from last season, winning six more matches to date and leading the Cardinal to its 11th all-time, and first since 2002, NCAA Tournament appearance. His team ranked near the top in many defensive categories, including goals allowed, goals against average and shutouts.
