Bruin Soccer Defeats LMU, 1-0
Feb. 28, 2004 Los Angeles, CA - The UCLA men's soccer team remained unbeaten in the spring season after defeating Loyola Marymount, 1-0, in the first game of the LMU Tournament. Junior Ryan Valdez scored the game's only goal in the 11th minute. Brandon Owens put the goal in motion with a perfectly placed midfield pass that thread the needle between two LMU defenders to find Ahmed Khalil. Khalil sent a cross to Valdez to the top of the box, and Valdez rocketed the shot past the Lions' keeper. UCLA goalkeeper Eric Reed earned the shutout and made several quality saves. He leaped high to tip a header in the 23rd minute and snuffed a one-on-one scoring opportunity in the 30th minute. His final save came in the 60th minute on a point-blank shot in the box. Reed also created several goal scoring opportunities for the Bruins with his arm, twice sending outstanding outlet passes to Mike Enfield in the second half for near-goals. In the Bruins' second game of the day, UCLA fell to UC Irvine, 2-0.
