STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University men's soccer Head Coach Brett Simon is proud to announce the signing of five standout soccer players for the freshman class entering in the fall of 2004. Mark Bartlett (Wellington, New Zealand), Scott Bolkan (Salem, OR), Evan Morgan (Littleton, CO), Luke Sager (Farmington, CT), and Dan Shapiro (New Haven, CT) comprise Stanford's incoming class.

"This recruiting class is one of the top 10 classes in the country," said Simon. "Along with last year's class, the foundation has been set to put Stanford Soccer back into championship contention. This class adds talent, depth and fills particular needs in our defensive group. I'm thrilled at the quality of people, students and athletes who will join us next August."

Bartlett, much like 2003 Cardinal co-captain Mike Wilson, will make the trip from New Zealand to The Farm. Bartlett, a central defender, boasts international experience.

"Mark is another in the line of talented Kiwi's who have attended Stanford," said Simon. He is currently a member of the New Zealand U-20 National Team."

Bolkan is also a central defender who hails from Salem, OR. Bolkan attended South Salem High School and was named an NSCAA All-American. Bolkan was also selected as an Adidas ESP All-Star.

"Scott was one of the top central defenders in the prestigious ESP recruiting showcase. He is capable of playing virtually anywhere on the field. Scott is playing up a year for the West Regional ODP team and is among the national pool for his age group."

Morgan is a midfielder from Chatfield High school in Littleton, CO. Like Bolkan, Morgan was also an NSCAA All-American.

"Evan is a versatile and athletic midfielder. He has played for the Rush Soccer Club, developers of some of Stanford's top players over the past five years. Evan is also a member of the West Regional ODP team."

Sager is a versatile player who can play either midfielder or defender. Sager is from Farmington, CT where he played for Farmington High School. Sager was also an Adidas ESP All-Star.

"Luke is a multifaceted player who is capable of contributing at a number of different positions. Luke was recognized as one of the top players at the ESP event last summer and he also helped his high school team to an undefeated season and a state championship."

Shapiro, a New Haven, CT native, can play either striker or attacking midfielder. Shapiro, who played for Hopkins School, has been a member of the youth national team pool.

"Dan has consistently been one of the East Regional ODP's leading scorers. He has the ability to score goals, create for others and control the flow of the game."
