Nov. 30, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Running back Toby Gerhart of Stanford, linebacker Malcolm Smith of USC and kicker Alex Zendejas of Arizona have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football. Gerhart, a senior from Norco, Calif., keyed the Stanford attack in the Cardinal's 45-38 shootout win against Notre Dame. Gerhart rushed 29 times for 205 yards (7.1) and three touchdowns of 4, 10 and 4 yards, with the final score being the game-winner with 59 seconds remaining in the contest. In addition, Gerhart threw and 18-yard touchdown pass and added one reception for 33 yards. The three rushing touchdowns give Gerhart 26 for the year, establishing a new Stanford and Pac-10 single-season record. It is the third time in the last four weeks that Gerhart has been named Pac-10 offensive player of the week. Smith, a junior from Northridge, Calif., led the Trojan defensive charge in USC's 28-7 win against UCLA. Smith recorded a game-high 15 tackles, seven solo, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown. The USC defense limited UCLA to 322 yards total offense and picked off three passes. Smith also has been named national defensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Foundation. Zendejas, a sophomore from Glendale, Ariz., kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired to give Arizona a 20-17 road win at Arizona State. For the game he was 2-3 on field goal attempts and 2-2 on PATs. Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors was quarterback Jake Locker of Washington.
