2003 Football Year In Review
USC won the Pac-10 Championship outright with a 7-1 Conference record, and was 12-1 overall on its way to being named National Champion by the the Associated Press. For the second straight season, USC and WASHINGTON STATE found themselves in the Top-10 in the nation at the end of the year, finishing No. 1 and No. 9, respectively.
The Pac-10 went 4-2 in the postseason, including victories over two teams ranked in the Top 5 in the polls. USC topped No. 4-ranked Michigan 28-14 in the Rose Bowl and claimed the National Championship voted on by the media in the AP poll. It was the first national title for the Trojans since 1978 and the first for the Pac-10 since Washington in 1991. Washington State defeated No. 5-ranked Texas 28-20 in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. The victory gave the Cougars their third consecutive 10-win season. CALIFORNIA (Insight Bowl) and OREGON STATE (Las Vegas Bowl) also chalked up postseason wins.
As for individual awards, USC's Matt Leinart and UCLA's Dave Ball won the Pac-10's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year awards, Oregon State's Brandon Browner won Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, and the Trojans' Pete Carroll and the Cougars' Bill Doba won Co-Coach of the Year honors.
