Around the league... How much difference does a foot make? In the first week of action, Pac-10 teams combined to shoot 58-of-170 (.341) from beyond the new three-point arc (20 feet, nine inches). Conference teams shot a combined .361 last season at 19 feet, nine inches. Those stepping back to successfully hit from the extended arc in the opening week were ARIZONA STATE sophomore G Rihards Kuksiks (4-of-7), CALIFORNIA junior G Jerome Randle (4-of-6), and STANFORD senior G Anthony Goods (4-of-7)... ARIZONA STATE sophomore G James Harden picked up where he left off last season as he posted his third career double-double with 24 points and 10 assists in victory over Mississippi Valley State... With the 68-56 win over Pacific, CALIFORNIA coach Mike Montgomery became the fourth head coach in Conference history to post wins while coaching at two separate league institutions. During his 18 years at Stanford, Montgomery posted a 393-167 record. The three other head coaches who posted wins while at two different league schools - Marv Harshman (WSU 1959-71; WASH 1972-85), George Raveling (WSU 1973-83; USC 1987-94) and Forrest Twogood (Idaho 1937-41/USC 1951-66)... STANFORD senior F Lawrence Hill posted a double-double (22 pts/11 reb) in the Cardinal's win at Yale. He also added four assists all in just 19 minutes of action... USC coach Tim Floyd finally found success in a season opener. After dropping season-opening games to Cal State Northridge (2005-06), South Carolina (2006-07) and Mercer (2007-08) in Floyd's first three seasons at USC, the Trojans came through with a season-opening win over UC Irvine, 78-55. USC junior F Taj Gibson tallied five blocked shots in the win over UC Irvine. It's the fifth time in his career that he's posted five or more rejections in a game. He has 158 career blocked shots and is within range of school record holder Sam Clancy (195 blocked shots, 1999-02)... WASHINGTON senior F Jon Brockman grabbed the 41st double-double of his career with 30 points/14 rebounds in a loss at Portland.... WASHINGTON STATE limited Mississippi Valley State to 25 points in a 76-25 victory. The 25 points allowed by the Cougars is the fewest since allowing 23 points to Idaho, Jan. 23, 1948 (48-23 win). The 51-point margin of victory is the second-largest margin of victory in WSU history. The largest is 54 points against Delaware State (93-39) (Dec. 3, 1988).
