UCLA captured both the Pac-10 regular season title and the Pac-10 Tournament crown en route to a school record-tying 32 victories. The Bruins excelled in the postseason, reaching the NCAA Championship game before falling to Florida. UCLA was the first Pac-10 team to reach the NCAA Final Four since Arizona did so in 2001... In all, the Pac-10 had four teams participate in the NCAA Tournament - ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, UCLA and WASHINGTON. In addition to UCLA's climb to the Final Four, Washington reached the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season... Defenses dominated the Pac-10 this season. For the third year in a row, WASHINGTON STATE led the Pac-10 in scoring defense, allowing a league-low 57.7 points per game. UCLA allowed just 58.7 points per game, including a stretch of allowing just 53.9 points per game during its 12-game winning streak on the way to the NCAA Championship game. In all, each Pac-10 team held the opposition to an average of 70.0 points per game or less. It was the first time all 10 Conference teams accomplished the feat in the same season. The previous best was five teams allowing an average of 70 or fewer points per game in 1986 and 1987... Washington's Brandon Roy, the Pac-10 Player of the Year, was a consensus First Team All-American, while CALIFORNIA's Leon Powe was a consensus Second Team All-America pick.
PAC-10 AND THE NCAA TOURNAMENT... With four teams selected for the NCAA Tournament, the Pac-10 sent four or more teams into the Tournament for the 12th time in 13 years... Over the last six NCAA Tournaments, the Pac-10 has posted a 42-27 (.609) record and has had 12 teams reach the Sweet Sixteen... UCLA's appearance in the Final Four was the first by a Pac-10 team since Arizona played in the 2001 NCAA title game.
NOTES FROM AROUND THE PAC-10
Defensively, each Pac-10 team held its opponents to an average of 70 points per game or less. That's never been done in the Pac-10 since the shot clock was put to use starting with the 1985-86 season. The most in any season had been five teams in 1986 and 1987... Looking ahead to 2006-07 - Pac-10 teams return 76 percent of those players that made up the starting lineups this past season... Five McDonald's All-Americans will wear a Pac-10 uniform next season - Chase Budinger (Arizona), Brook and Robin Lopez (Stanford), James Keefe (UCLA), and Spencer Hawes (Washington).
ARIZONA made its 22nd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, the nation's longest active streak. With a 20-13 record, the Wildcats have posted 20 or more wins in each of the last 19 seasons... Senior G Hassan Adams is the only player in Pac-10 history with 1,700 points, 700 rebounds and 200 steals... Freshman F Marcus Williams led all Pac-10 freshmen in scoring (13.0 ppg). He scored in double digits in each of the final six games of the season, averaging 17.8 points during that span... Junior G Mustafa Shakur, a native of Philadelphia, was impressive in his return to his hometown during the opening weekend of NCAA play. He averaged 19.0 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds, while shooting 13-of-24 (.542) from the field, including 7-of-9 (.778) from three-point range... Arizona returns four starters - Williams (13.0 ppg/4.7 rpg), Shakur (11.2 ppg/4.7 apg), junior F Ivan Radenovic (12.1 ppg/6.3 rpg) and junior C Kirk Walters (6.1 ppg/3.5 rpg).
ARIZONA STATE named Herb Sendek as head coach of the Sun Devils on April 3. Sendek moves to the Pac-10 after 10 seasons in the Atlantic Coast Conference at North Carolina State, where he compiled a record of 191-132 (.591). His overall record stands at 253-158 (.647) in 13 seasons... Junior G Kevin Kruger averaged a school record 38.96 minutes per game. He played all 40 minutes in 12 games, including seven of the last 11 contests. He played 1,091 out of 1,140 possible minutes (95.7 percent)... Center Jeff Pendergraph, a Pac-10 All-Freshman pick, averaged 14.7 ppg over the last nine games... Sendek will welcomed by five returning starters in 2006-07 - Kruger (15.0 ppg/40.3% 3FG/3.4 rpg), Pendergraph (10.9 ppg/6.1 rpg), junior G Bryson Krueger (12.3 ppg/3.4 rpg), junior F Serge Angounou (7.3 ppt/5.1 rpg), and sophomore G Antwi Atuahene (7.1 ppg/3.6 rpg/3.9 apg).
CALIFORNIA made its 14th NCAA Tournament appearance... Sophomore F Leon Powe is the first Bear to lead the league in scoring (20.5 ppg) and rebounding (10.1 rpg) since Mark McNamara in 1982. In fact, it's been done only five times in the Pac-10 - Ike Diogu (Arizona State, 2005), A.C. Green (Oregon State, 1985), McNamara (Cal, 1982), Bill Walton (UCLA, 1972) and Lew Alcindor (UCLA, 1967-69). Powe is the first Pac-10 player to average a double-double since Stanford's Adam Keefe accomplished the feat in 1992... Cal allowed only 64.5 ppg - the lowest for a Bear team since the 1985-86 squad surrendered 63.4 ppg... Cal returns four starters for 2006-07 - Powe (20.5 ppg/10.1 rpg), junior G Ayinde Ubaka (14.5 ppg/3.0 rpg/3.8 apg), sophomore G Omar Wilkes (7.6 ppg/1.5 rpg), and sophomore C DeVon Hardin (7.3 ppg/6.6 rpg).
OREGON allowed an average of 65.3 ppg. That's UO's best defensive average since the 1984-85 squad allowed 61.9 ppg... Heartbreak City - the Ducks were 1-9 in games decided by five points or less. Eight of those losses were by three points or less... Sophomore G Chamberlain Oguchi averaged 18.1 ppg over the last 10 games, hitting 40 of his team-leading 68 three-pointers in that span... Oguchi set a Pac-10 Tournament record with 14 three-pointers in three games... The Ducks return all five starters. In fact, nine returning players each earned 10 or more starts. Sophomore Pac-10 honorable mention selection, G/F Malik Hairston (15.0 ppg/4.7 rpg) led the Ducks with 32 games started, and junior G Aaron Brooks (10.8 ppg/4.4 apg) posted 31 starts.
OREGON STATE sophomore F Marcel Jones finished up the year averaging 12.7 ppg and 5.7 rpg over the final seven games... Senior G Chris Stephens finished his career with the OSU career record for three-point field goals (180) and free throw percentage (86.2 percent)... Senior G Lamar Hurd suffered a groin injury and missed the final 15 games. With Hurd in the lineup, OSU shot 46.1% and averaged 68.8 points. Without him, it shot 41.5% and averaged 62.8 points... Sophomore F Sasa Cuic averaged 19.0 points in the final 10 games of the Pac-10 regular season... OSU will return three starters in 2005-06, and those three make up a very good starting frontline - Jones (9.2 ppg/6.7 rpg), Cuic (13.5 ppg/4.5 rpg), and junior center Kyle Jeffers (6.3 ppg/4.2 rpg).
STANFORD senior F Matt Haryasz is one of three Cardinal all-time to post 1,000 points/700 rebounds/100 blocked shots... Senior G Chris Hernandez finished his career with 1,265 points, 396 assists and 138 steals. Former Cardinal players Brevin Knight and Todd Lichti were the only other Cardinal players to post 1,250 points, 300 assists and 100 steals... Stanford's 39 points in its victory at Washington State is the fewest for a winning team in Pac-10 play since the introduction of the shot clock in 1986... Returning starters for the Cardinal in 2006-07 include sophomore F Taj Finger (4.8 ppg/3.3 rpg) and freshman G Mitch Johnson (3.4 ppg/3.3 apg).
UCLA won its 28th Conference title and first since 1997. It's the 42nd 20-win season for the Bruins. At 32 wins, it's the sixth 30-win season in school history and ties the school record for most wins in a season (set in 1995)... Pac-10 Freshman of the Year F Luc Richard Mbah a Moute set a UCLA freshman record for rebounds, averaging 8.2 rpg. Of his 318 rebounds this season, 117 were on the offensive boards. He also posted a UCLA rookie record with eight double-doubles this season... UCLA entered the national championship game with a 12-game winning streak. During those 12 games, UCLA held its opponent to an average of 53.9 points. Only Gonzaga in the Oakland region semifinal scored more than 60 points (71 points) during the winning streak... Returning starters for the Bruins in 2006-07 include Mbah a Moute (9.1 ppg/8.2 rpg), sophomore G Jordan Farmar (13.5 ppg/5.1 apg), and sophomore G Arron Afflalo (15.8 ppg/4.2 rpg).
USC posted a 17-win season under first-year coach Tim Floyd that included victories over top-20 ranked foes North Carolina and UCLA... Sophomore G Gabe Pruitt tallied 30 or more points three times this season, becoming the first Trojan to do so since Harold Miner in 1992 (11)... Sophomore F Nick Young is one of three Pac-10 players to rank in the league's top 10 in scoring (4th/17.3 ppg) and rebounding (7th/6.6 rpg)... Starting next season, USC will play its games in the state-of-the-art Galen Center... USC returns all five starters for 2006-07 - Young (17.3 ppg/6.6 rpg), Pruitt (16.9 ppg/4.0 rpg/38.0% 3FG/2.2 spg), junior G Lodrick Stewart (12.3 ppg/3.6 rpg), freshman G Ryan Francis (7.1 ppg/2.7 rpg/3.7 apg), and junior C Abdoulaye N'diaye (5.3 ppg/4.7 rpg/1.6 bpg).
WASHINGTON has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 1984-85, and only the second time since 1953... The 55 total wins over the past two years are the most over a two-year period in UW history... The Huskies made their third consecutive NCAA appearance, tying the school record of three straight appearances run off in 1984, `85 and `86... Senior G Brandon Roy became the second Husky to earn Pac-10 Player of the Year honors, joining former UW standout Chris Welp (1986)... With 1,477 points, Roy finished his career 10th on UW's career scoring list. He's sixth on the school's career list for assists with 308... Roy is the second consensus All-American in school history, and the first since Bob Houbregs in 1953... Freshman F Jon Brockman became the second Husky freshman all-time to grab 200 rebounds in a season. He finished the season ranked seventh in the Pac-10, averaging 6.5 rpg... Freshman G Justin Dentmon set a UW frosh record with 124 assists. Dentmon and Roy (135 assists) were the seventh pair of players to each post 100 or more assists in the same season for the Huskies... The Huskies return two starters for 2006-07 - Brockman (8.4 ppg/6.5 rpg) and Dentmon (8.3 ppg/3.5 rpg/3.8 apg).
WASHINGTON STATE used 23 different starting lineups in 28 games this season... The Cougars held the opposition to a league-best 57.7 ppg... WSU matched a school record with 130 blocked shots this season. Ranked among the league's top 10 were sophomore F Robbie Cowgill (1.32 bpg) and junior F Ivory Clark (1.11 bpg)... Coach Dick Bennett retired at the conclusion of the season and handed the reigns over to son Tony Bennett. The younger Bennett becomes the 16th man to lead the WSU program... With 23 different starting lineups this past season, seven returning Cougars were given the opportunity to start at least 11 games this past year. A majority of the starts went to Cowgill (9.2 ppg/5.1 rpg), sophomore G Kyle Weaver (8.6 ppg/4.3 rpg/4.0 apg) and sophomore G Derrick Low (8.3 ppg/3.2 apg).

Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament Notes... UCLA becomes the fifth different Pac-10 team in the last five years to win the Pac-10 Tournament. Arizona won it in 2002, followed by Oregon (2003), Stanford (2004) and Washington (2005)... California's Leon Powe pulled down a Tournament record 20 rebounds to go with 22 points in Cal's win over USC in the quarterfinals. The next night he posted a career-high and Tournament record 41 points against Oregon. He scored 80 points in three Tournament games (26.7 ppg). Only UCLA's Reggie Miller scored more with 83 points during the 1987 Tournament... Oregon's Chamberlain Oguchi broke a Tournament record with 14 three-pointers. He collected six against Washington State, six vs. Washington and two vs. California.
