TEMPE, Ariz. - Redshirt freshman Kyle Mills-Bunje ended day-one action of the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships today in Tempe, Ariz., in fifth place with 3,598 points, with junior Kristin Holmes in ninth in the heptathlon with 3,041 points and fellow junior Tifani Grimes in 12th with 2,939 points.
Mills-Bunje recorded a new personal best in the 100 meters, clocking an 11.39. He earned his most points of the day of 811 in the long jump as he posted a mark of 22-11.25 (6.99m), the third best among all competitors. He also notched the third-best mark of the day in the shot put with a 39-05 (12.01m). Oregon's Ashton Eaton ended the first day of the decathlon in first with 4,069 points.
Holmes earned PRs in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200 meters. She clocked a 15.20 in the 100-meter hurdles and a 24.20 in the 200 meters. Her time in the 200 meters was the second-best time among all competitors. Grimes tallied her season-best mark in the high jump of 5-5.25 (1.66m). She earned her most points of the day in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 14.97 to collect 846 points. Arizona State's Jacquelyn Johnsom leads the heptathlon after the first day with 3,691 points.
Mills-Bunje, Holmes and Grimes conclude the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships tomorrow night. California will also compete tomorrow in the California Relays in Modesto, Calif., and in the UC Davis Aggie Twilight meet in Davis,Calif.
