Pacific-10 Conference Athletes Recognized as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars, which are presented by the Diverse: Issues In High Education magazine, were recently named, recognizing the academic achievements of 49 Pacific-10 Conference student-athletes from four member institutions. Named for the famed tennis player and scholar Arthur Ashe, student-athletes have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their communities to be eligible for the award.

    2008-09 Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarship Winners Announced

    Commissioner Larry Scott has announced the 39 outstanding Pac-10 student-athletes who have been named recipients of Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarships for 2008-09. These $3,000 awards go to student-athletes with a minimum 3.0 GPA who have also demonstrated a commitment to continuing education, campus and community involvement, and leadership. Since the program began in 1999, the Pac-10 has awarded over $1 million for postgraduate study.

    USTFCCCA Honors 98 Pac-10 Student-Athletes on All-Academic Track and Field Teams

    Oregon's Galen Rupp and Arizona State's Jason Lewis added to their collection of 2008-09 track & field hardware as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the 2009 Division I Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Athletes of the Year. Lewis was recognized as Indoor Field Scholar Athlete and Rupp garnered both Indoor and Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete honors. Fifty-six Pac-10 women student-athletes were among the record 530 qualifiers for the USTFCCCA Women's All-Academic Track and Field Selections.

    Duck Sensation Galen Rupp Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® of the Year

    Senior distance runner Galen Rupp of the University of Oregon has been selected as the 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® of the Year, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A Business Administration major with a 3.89 G.P.A., Rupp was selected as the Academic All-America® of the Year award for the University Division. He is the first Track and Cross Country athlete to be named as the Academic All-America® of the Year in the University Division since the inception of the award in 1988, and the second Pac-10 student-athlete ever to do so, oining Stanford's Tommy Vardell who was honored in 1992.
