Cougars to Finish Fall in Seattle
Nov. 6, 2009
What's Happening This Week: The Cougars will travel to Seattle for the 29th annual Head of the Lake Regatta Sunday, Nov.8. The 2009 Head of the Lake: Races will begin at 8 a.m...the three-mile regatta is hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club and is the largest Fall regatta west of the Mississippi...the Head of the Lake Regatta starts on Lake Union, continues east through the Montlake Cut to Lake Washington and finishes near the UW's Conibear Shellhouse...this year's course is known as the "classic course" used most often in the regatta's 28 years. WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere on Head of the Lake: "It's going to be nice to race outside competition. We've faced Gonzaga for two weeks in a row, and now we get to see some Pac-10 competition. University of Minnesota is going to be there and some crews from Canada and it will be great to race against some stiffer competition." "I think they're ready to have a good race. We can't control anybody else's speed, we just have to do our best and see what happens." About the Head of the Lake: With unpredictable Seattle weather, there exists each year the possibility of the course being shortened due to inclement weather, as was the case in 2007, or of the race being cancelled as was the case in 2006...notable teams competing in this year's regatta include cross-state rival Washington, as well as the University of Minnesota...the event attracts more than 2,500 rowers each year.
Last Year at the Head of the Lake: The Cougar varsity eight finished second, with a time of 17:38.23, only eight seconds behind first place Washington and 24 seconds ahead of British Columbia...the WSU second varsity eight also placed second, with a time of 18:20.14...the Cougar third varsity eight placed third, finishing 16 hundredths of a second in front of the fourth place boat from Washington, with a time of 19:18.06.
