Guided by Pac-10 Coach of the Year Steve Gladstone, the CALIFORNIA varsity men captured their fifth Conference Championship in as many years. The Bears also garnered the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) title for the fourth consecutive season as the team battled WASHINGTON for the top ranking in the polls all season long.

The Coach of the Year honor is the fifth straight for Gladstone and sixth overall. Gladstone, who just completed his sixth season in his second stint as head coach at California, also won the award in 1979. Washington's Jan Harville directed the Huskies to an 11th consecutive Pac-10 crown. Harville also led her squad to an NCAA varsity eight win en route to gaining a silver medal at the national championships. Harville went on win Coach of the Year honors. She completed her 15th year at Washington, earning her ninth Coach of the Year honor.
