WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The following Pacific-10 Conference Men's and Women's Rowing individual honors were announced today by Commissioner Tom Hansen. Also named were the 2008 All-Conference teams.

Men's Coach of the Year - Michael Callahan, WASH. The Huskies had three national champion crews (second varsity eight, varsity four, freshman four) and two silver medal crews (varsity eight, freshman eight) at the 2008 IRA Regatta. In addition, Coach Callahan directed Washington to a sweep at the Pac-10 Championships, where his crews won the men's team title thanks to victories in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, freshman eight and varsity four grand finals. Just months into his first season as the Washington men's head coach, Callahan coached the Huskies to varsity eight victories at the San Diego Crew Classic and Windermere Cup.

Women's Co-Coaches of the Year -
Yasmin Farooq, STAN.
In only her second season as head coach of the Stanford Women's Rowing program, Coach Farooq guided the Cardinal to an astonishing second place finish in the varsity eight grand finals at the Women's NCAA Rowing Championships. The runner-up feat was achieved after the same crew nabbed silver for the second consecutive year in the Pac-10 Championship race. Meanwhile, the second varsity boat added a second podium finish for the Cardinal, as that crew raced to a third place finish at the Conference championships.

Dave O'Neill, CAL. Coach O'Neill is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Coach of the Year, three-time CRCA West Region Coach of the Year, and now four-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Currently in his 10th year at the helm of Cal, O'Neill has led the Golden Bears to five top-three finishes at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, including a third-place finish in this year's national regatta. Ranked No. 1 in the nation this season for many weeks, Cal dominated the Pac-10 Championships with gold medal performances by the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and novice eight boats, as well as a second place finish by the varsity four crew.

Men's Athlete of the Year - Heath Allen, WASH. Distinguished as the outstanding senior male student-athlete from Washington - based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership - Allen was named a 2008 Pac-10 Medal Winner. In addition, he earned accolades on the water as a member of the silver medal varsity eight crew at the IRA Championships. Rowing in the No. 7 seat this season, Allen was part of the Pac-10 Champion varsity eight crew that secured the team victory for the Huskies.

Women's Athlete of the Year - Jessi Reel, STAN. A member of the varsity eight crew for three seasons, Reel guided Stanford to two consecutive second place finishes at the 2007 and 2008 Pac-10 Championships. After finishing 10th at last year's NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, the Cardinal surprised the rowing community with a silver medal performance in the 2008 edition of the varsity eight grand final. Reel is a leader in the classroom, as well, qualifying as a Pac-10 Women's Rowing All-Academic First Team member each of the last two seasons.

Men's Newcomer of the Year - Blaise Didier, WASH. Rowing three seats in front of Allen, Didier held position in the No. 4 seat of the varsity eight boat this season. Also a member of the IRA Championships silver medal squad and the Pac-10 Champion crew, Didier helped the Washington varsity eight boat to the San Diego Crew Classic title.

Women's Newcomer of the Year - Mary Jeghers, CAL. Jeghers rowed as part of the Cal varsity eight in every race of the 2008 campaign. Along with her crew, Jeghers earned Cal's Muscle Milk Student-Athlete(s) of the Week award after leading the Golden Bears to the overall Conference crown with a victory in the varsity eight grand final at the Pac-10 Championships.
