USC Women's Golf Wins First Team Title in 19 Years

Photo Gallery PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - Paola Moreno of USC shot a 4-under 67 to claim the individual crown as the Trojans won their first team title in 19 years as the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Championships came to a close Wednesday at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Moreno, a senior from Cali, Colombia, had five birdies on the back nine en route to the best round of the tournament. "When I made the last putt, I had no idea I won. I knew I was giving myself a chance, but no one had said a thing," said Moreno, who overcame a three stroke deficit entering the final round. "It's like a dream." Moreno (70-75-67) was only player to finish under par, but she had plenty of help as the entire USC roster excelled. "I had no idea actually how well they were playing until I looked at the scores in the end," USC Coach Andrea Gaston said. "All of them in the top eight, that's just great golf. There's no doubt these girls can come out and play on any given day." UCLA (284-302-300) finished 26 shots behind the rival Trojans (285-292-283), with Arizona State (296-294-301) in third place. Arizona (301-299-308) and California (301-305-302) shared fourth at 56-over. The Sun Devils were paced by sophomore Anna Nordqvist (74-70-72), who was four strokes behind Moreno. The Bruins' Tiffany Joh (69-73-75) and Belen Mozo (71-71-75) of USC, who had shared the lead after 36 holes, tied for third with fellow Trojan Dewi Claire Schreefel (74-74-69). All four made the 2008 All-Pac-10 First Team, voted upon by conference coaches and announced following the conclusion of play. Joh, a two-time All-American, was named Pac-10 Golfer of the Year, while USC's Lizette Salas was recognized as Freshman of the Year. Gaston took home Coach of the Year honors for the first time after 12 years leading the Trojans.
