Structure Of the Pac-10 SAAC

1. Representatives

    1.1. Number:
      1.1.1. Each Pac-10 institution shall be represented by four student-athletes, two males and two females. One male and one female student-athlete will be identified as the primary voting representatives, while the other two will be alternates.
      1.1.2. The Pac-10's representative to the NCAA SAAC shall be an ex-officio member of the Pac-10 SAAC, if he/she is not one of the four representatives from his/her institution.

    1.2. Term
      1.2.1. Each representative shall serve a two-year term.
      1.2.2. Representatives may serve more than one term.
      1.2.3. Terms shall be staggered appropriately to provide continuity to the Council.

    1.3. Selection
      1.3.1. Each campus, in consultation with its campus SAAC, shall determine its Pac-10 SAAC representatives. The campus representatives to the Pac-10 SAAC shall be ex-officio members of their campus SAAC, if they are not otherwise members.
      1.3.2. All NCAA-eligible student-athletes in any varsity sport shall be eligible to be serve, even if he/she competes in a sport not sponsored by the Pac-10 Conference (e.g., Mountain Pacific Sports Federation sports).
      1.3.3. Representatives shall be selected by each institution at their discretion. Student-athletes may serve on the Pac-10 SAAC up to a year after completion of his/her intercollegiate athletics eligibility.

    1.4. Diversity
      1.4.1. Institutions are encouraged to consider ethnic and sport diversity in the selection of their Pac-10 SAAC representatives.

2. Committee Structure

    2.1. Executive Committee
      2.1.1. There shall be an Executive Committee of the Pac-10 SAAC, comprised of four members, to be elected on an annual basis by the Pac-10 SAAC by a vote of its members from among those who are willing to serve.
      2.1.2. The duties of the Executive Committee shall include appointing members to Pac-10 SAAC subcommittees, assisting in Pac-10 Student-Athlete Forum meeting planning, and creating the agenda for the Pac-10 SAAC meetings in consultation with the Communications Subcommittee.
      2.1.3. Two of the four members of the Executive Committee shall be elected cochairpersons of the SAAC. The other two shall serve as co-vice-chairs.
      2.1.4. One co-chair shall represent the Pac-10 SAAC to the Pac-10 Council and attend meetings of the Council as invited.

    2.2. Legislative Subcommittee
      2.2.1. There shall be a Legislative Subcommittee of the Pac-10 SAAC, comprised of three members, to be appointed by the Executive Committee. The Pac- 10's representative to the NCAA SAAC shall be an ex-officio member of the Legislative Subcommittee.
      2.2.2. The duties of the Legislative Subcommittee shall include assisting the Pac- 10's NCAA SAAC representative in tracking NCAA and Conferencespecific legislation, and identifying student-athlete welfare issues.
      2.2.3. Pac-10 SAAC positions on NCAA legislation will be developed after discussion of the issues, by a vote of the SAAC members.
      2.2.4. The Legislative Subcommittee shall identify timelines for comment periods, and communicate the Pac-10 SAAC comments, if any, to the NCAA through the Pac-10's NCAA SAAC representative.

    2.3. Community Service Subcommittee
      2.3.1. There shall be a Community Service Subcommittee of the Pac-10 SAAC, comprised of three members, to be appointed by the Executive Committee.
      2.3.2. The duties of the Community Service Subcommittee shall include developing ideas for and coordinating Conference-wide community service opportunities. The subcommittee may also seek sponsorship for such activities.
      2.3.3. The subcommittee shall coordinate Conference-wide National Student- Athlete Day Activities, and work with the media for coverage of these events.

    2.4. Communications Subcommittee
      2.4.1. There shall be a Communications Subcommittee of the Pac-10 SAAC, comprised of three members, to be appointed by the Executive Committee.
      2.4.2. The duties of the Communications Subcommittee shall include development and monitoring of a Pac-10 SAAC web page, monitoring the Pac-10 Student-Athlete List-Serve, and maintaining a current and accurate roster of Pac-10 SAAC members. It will also work with the Executive Committee to create and distribute agendas for Pac-10 SAAC meetings.

    2.5. Cooper Tire/Pac-10 Leadership Award Subcommittee
      2.5.1. There shall be a Cooper Tire/Pac-10 Leadership Award Subcommittee of the Pac-10 SAAC, comprised of three members, to be appointed by the Executive Committee.
      2.5.2. The duties of the Cooper Tire/Pac-10 Leadership Award Subcommittee shall be to annually review all applications for the Cooper Tire/Pac-10 Leadership Award from Pac-10 member institutions, and identify three male and three female finalists for the award. Those names shall be forwarded to the Pac-10 SAAC for a vote to determine the winners of the award at its fall meeting.

    2.6. NCAA Sportsmanship Award Subcommittee
      2.6.1. There shall be a NCAA Sportsmanship Award Subcommittee of the Pac-10 SAAC, comprised of three members, to be appointed by the Executive Committee.
      2.6.2. The duties of the NCAA Sportsmanship Subcommittee shall shall be to annually review all applications for the NCAA Sportsmanship Award from Pac-10 member institutions, and identify three finalists of each gender for the awards. Those names shall be forwarded to the Pac-10 SAAC for a vote to determine the winners of the awards at the spring meeting.

3. Conference Liaisons

    3.1. Pac-10 Council: The standing Pac-10 SAAC Advisory Committee (with representatives from each Council subgroup, as well as institutional Like Skills and Compliance representatives) shall serve as advisor to the Pac-10 SAAC and as the liaison between the Pac-10 SAAC and the Pac-10 Council. The Conference liaisons shall attend all meetings of the Pac-10 SAAC and be responsible for planning the program for the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Forums in consultation with the Executive Committee.

    3.2. Conference Office Staff: The Pac-10 Conference Office will provide appropriate staffing to assist with development and execution of the Pac-10 SAAC meetings and Student-Athlete Forums. It is recommended that the current Pac-10 Administrative Fellow be one of the liaisons to the Pac-10 SAAC. 3.3. The Pac-10 staff shall record and distribute the minutes of the Pac-10 SAAC meetings, which will be distributed to all Pac-10 SAAC members, Council members, and institutional life skills coordinators.

4. Meetings

    4.1. Number: There shall be two meetings of the Pac-10 SAAC annually (fall and spring; dates subject to change).

    4.2. Format for Fall Meeting: The two Pac-10 SAAC representatives (or their alternates) from each institution shall attend the Fall meeting of the Pac-10 SAAC. This meeting shall be held in November, and last from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. The SAAC will perform a community service project during the fall meeting.

    4.3. Format for Spring Meeting: The two Pac-10 SAAC representatives (or their alternates) from each institution shall attend the Spring meeting of the Pac-10 SAAC, which will be held in conjunction with the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Forum. These meetings shall be held in late spring (April or early May). Two additional representatives from each institution shall attend the Forum. The Pac-10 SAAC members will arrive Friday night, with the SAAC meeting Friday night and Saturday morning. The Student-Athlete Forum activities shall begin on Saturday afternoon and end on Sunday afternoon.

5. NCAA SAAC Representative

    5.1. The nominees required by the NCAA for the Pac-10's NCAA SAAC representative shall be identified by the Pac-10 Selection Committee.

    5.2. Notification of an upcoming vacancy for the Pac-10 representative to the NCAA SAAC will be sent to all Pac-10 SAAC members via the Pac-10 list serve.

    5.3. Any institutional nominee for the NCAA SAAC must have been a member of institution's SAAC for at least one complete year.
