Oroweat "Healthy Minds" Scholarship Program Overview
The Oroweat "Healthy Minds" Postgraduate Scholarship was established in 2006-07 by the Pac-10 Conference and Pac-10 corporate partner Oroweat to recognize one outstanding male and one outstanding female annually with a $10,000 grant for postgraduate study.
The "Healthy Minds" winners are selected from among the group of 40 Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarship recipients, comprised of two males and two females named annually by each Pac-10 institution. The selections are made by a Pac-10 committee which includes institutional administrators and faculty representatives, a student-athlete member of the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and a representative of Pac-10 Properties, the marketing arm of the Conference. The committee evaluates the candidates in four areas: academic achievement, athletics achievement, community service, and academic goals and aspirations.
Selections are made in July with the winners announced in early August.
The winners of the 2008-09 Oroweat "Healthy Minds" Scholarship were UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin and Aizona's Craig Sheedy. The winners of the inaugural award in 2006-07 were Kal Clark of Arizona State and Katy Trotter of Stanford. California's Jernej Godec and Oregon State's Yuki Lamb were winners in 2007-08.
ELIZABETH LUMPKIN, UCLA Lumpkin, a native of Naperville, Ill., was a singles and doubles player for the Bruins. Her semifinal singles-match victory at the 2008 NCAA Championships helped UCLA capture the national crown and wrapped up her collegiate career. That same year, she went 24-1 in singles, was undefeated at the No. 4 (4-0) and No. 5 (15-0) positions. She was a Pac-10 Player of the Week on Feb. 25, 2008, after defeating three ranked players from three teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation. A team captain as a senior, she ranked in the top 100 in the nation individually, and No. 55 in doubles, in her final season at UCLA.
Outside of sport, Lumpkin has complimented her studies in communications and political science with a variety of activities, including volunteering at the Mattel Children's hospital and with Habitat for Humanity. She has participated in events geared toward youth, including "I'm Going to College Event," "Women in Sports Day" and "Marathon for Kids Celebration." She served on the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for two years and on the Bruin Athletic Council for three years, earning leadership honors such as the Arthur Ashe Leadership Award for West Region and the Cissy Leary Sportsmanship Award for West Region.
Lumpkin was recently selected one of 30 UCLA students to participate in the Center for American Politics and Public Policy Program in Washington, D.C., where she interns at CBS News and conducts original research for the "Evening News" television magazine.. |
