Washington Gymnastics 2006-2007

Written By Chelsea Bakken

Another season of Husky Gymnastics is about to begin and our team is looking more prepared than ever! The freshmen have successfully completed their first academic quarter along with making it through their first of many vigorous pre-season practices. On the other hand, the seniors are in their home stretch as they get ready to debut their final performances forever!

The sophomores and juniors are right on track, plugging away at their routines as we tumble into another season. For gymnasts, competing is the most exciting way to show the world all the hard work put in throughout the last four months. Junior Jenni Chang explains, The competition floor is our stage and each routine is a chance to shine! Most sports have a pre-season that lasts one to two months before they are ready to play, but gymnastics needs double that time in order to make our bodies fly through the air hundreds of times a day! For the GymDawgs, this next quarter will display the immense amount of hard work in the gym that has allowed us to reach our number one goal before the season starts which was being prepared.

The Husky Gymnastics program has been through a lot in the past year but we are ready to hit the ground running as new head coach Joanne Bowers always says. The Husky gymnasts were not alone while preparing for this season. Joanne Bowers, David McCreary, and Shanna Duggan are a fresh new coaching staff that has collectively added motivating and positive attitudes to this team and the University of Washington athletic community. Washington gymnastics is extremely lucky to have such an amazing coaching staff that will lead this program in the right direction with the many years to come.

Our team goal now is to go into every meet aggressive and confident. I think that I speak for all gymnasts when I say that consistency is the key to a successful meet. We have trained long hours mentally and physically in order to be the best we can be. In gymnastics it doesnt necessarily matter if you win or lose. Its the score that every team is trying to improve at each meet allowing us to move up in the rankings every week in hopes of getting a good regional qualifying placement. Despite the rough season Washington experienced last year, first-year coach Bowers exclaims of Washington gymnasts, They're more confident, and more prepared, and are excited to take the first step in returning Washington gymnastics to the level it should be." The season is here and the Washington gymnasts are geared up and ready to take it on!
